Hopman Cup
Australia (Perth)
3 - 9 Jan 2009
The Hopman Cup in Perth welcomes teams of two players (one male, one female) from the world's leading tennis nations. During the seven-day tournament at Burswood Dome there are men and women's singles matches, as well as mixed doubles.
Harry Hopman was one of the all-time great Australian tennis gurus. One of his greatest hopes was to create an international mixed team event to equal that of the Davis Cup (all male) and Federation Cup (all female). So when this event was founded by Paul McNamee, Charlie Faircutt and Pat Cash in 1988, it was named after him.
The Slovak Republic reigned supreme in the 2005 final, with Daniela Hantuchova and Dominik Hrbaty beating Argentine pair Gisela Dulko and Guillermo Coria in all three final games, while Russia pipped Spain to the winning post in 2006: Nadia Petrova and Dmitry Tursunov too strong for Anabel Medina Garrigues and Tommy Robredo. In 2008, the USA claimed its fifth Hopman Cup win as Serena Williams and Mardy Fish stormed to victory against the Serbian team Jelena Jankovic and Novak Djokovic.
