His Majesty's Theatre
You can catch the latest hit plays at the historic His Majesty's Theatre. Built in 1904, this is one of the state's premier venues to watch the West Australian Opera Company sing for their supper. You can also while away the hours browsing through the on-site museum which houses a collection of theatre memorabilia, with some items dating back to the 1850s.
Tiger, Tiger
While the wi-fi here attracts the bespectacled blogger types, the cool feel, with polished concrete floor, communal table and antique-style wooden chairs, might play a part too. The tasty cafe food's worth the twist down the laneway. It's signed off Murray St.
Maya Indian Restaurant
Maya's white tablecloths and wooden chairs signal classic style without the pomp. Its well-executed Indian favourites have made it a popular local spot, right through the week, for years. Special menu Friday.
Western Australian Museum
The Western Australian Museum includes an excellent 'land and people' display that examines the history of the indigenous people and the more recent past; a gallery of dinosaur casts; a good collection of meteorites; and mammal, butterfly and bird galleries.
Jackson's
If you love fine food and wine, don't deny yourself one of Perth's top dining experiences: Neal Jackson's tasting menu. This is a serious, long-established dining room that enjoys an excellent reputation. The menu spans dishes like crispy pork belly with caramelised apple and sage, or wagyu beef steak with celeriac and Roquefort mash.
Subiaco Oval
During the Australian Football League season it's hard to get locals to talk about anything but the two local teams - the Fremantle Dockers and the West Coast Eagles - and thrashing 'the Vics' (any Victorian team is considered an arch-enemy). There's a great atmosphere during the games at Subiaco Oval.
Aquarium of Western Australia
Few will fail to be impressed by the Aquarium of Western Australia. Wander through a 98m underwater tunnel as turtles, stingrays, fish and sharks glide over the top of you. A series of mini-marine worlds show off the state's underwater treasures: intriguing sea dragons, seahorses, moon jellies (which billow, iridescent, through a giant cylinder), venomous fish and sea snakes. Watch stingrays and seals play in the underwater-viewing area.
Must Winebar
Considering there's French house floating through the sound system and the perfect glass of wine in your hand (there are 40 by the glass, 500 on the wine list), it's very difficult to leave this buzzing bar in the thick of Beaufort St. It's probably the best wine bar in Perth, and the food's excellent.
Houghton Wines
A great little trip out of the city is to the Swan Valley vineyards. Dotted along the river to the Upper Swan, many are open for tastings and cellar sales. Start at the original, Houghton Wines.
Art Gallery of Western Australia
The Art Gallery of Western Australia has a brilliant collection of Aboriginal artworks. There's also a fine permanent exhibition of European, Australian and Asia-Pacific art, regular temporary exhibitions and a fabulous gift shop.
Little Creatures Brewery
Little Creatures is quite a gem. In a cavernous converted boat shed overlooking the harbour, this brewery can get chaotic at times (as can the service), but the home-brewed ales are well worth the wait. And the food is excellent - prosciutto-wrapped prawns, classic chilli tomato mussels, wood-fired pizzas. You can inspect the brewery vats yourself from the deck on the 2nd floor or almost nuzzle the boats from the boardwalk out back. No bookings.
